After what seemed to be a very long year, it gives us great joy to see the return of our signature events. In June, our sojourn committee welcomed boaters back to once again explore the Conemaugh Valley River Basin. The group traveled over 40 miles in four days, from Johnstown to Apollo, taking in the scenic river views.
This October, we bring back the West Penn Trail Triathlon.
When we started, the race was a way for us to showcase the river and trail amenities right in our own backyard. The West Penn Trail offers 17 miles of trail, traversing along the Conemaugh River and over four historic, stone arched bridges. The Conemaugh River provides boaters with a leisurely, scenic paddle that’s perfect for the entire family to enjoy. And, Saltsburg itself, is a small, river town with a rich history associated with the Pennsylvania Mainline Canal. There are ample opportunities to soak in nature, history, and to enjoy a good meal from one the local eateries.
Over the years, we’ve made a lot of news friends and our little race has grown. This non-traditional (chip-timed) triathlon features three stages. First, kayaking (approx. 7.5 miles), followed by a 14-mile trail cycling stage, with a true 5k on the trail to finish. Entrants may race solo or in teams of two to three. No gear? No problem. Our race page has contact information for our local outfitters, which can provide boating gear and limited bicycle rentals.
For more information or to register, visit our official sojourn page. Discounted rates are still available through October 1st! All proceeds from the triathlon will benefit the West Penn Trail Maintenance Fund, which is solely maintained by a great group of volunteers.
We can’t wait to see all again!
